Zohran Mamdani Wins NYC Mayor's Race
Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old state lawmaker, has been elected mayor of New York City, marking a historic moment as the city's first Muslim mayor, the first of South Asian heritage, and the first born in Africa.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist, won the election by defeating former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa, in a victory for the Democratic party's progressive wing.
As the city's most liberal mayor in generations, Mamdani will have to navigate the demands of America's biggest city and deliver on his ambitious campaign promises, which some skeptics consider unrealistic.
Mamdani's rise to power gives credence to Democrats who advocate for embracing more progressive, left-wing candidates, rather than centrists, to win back swing voters.
He will also become the city's youngest mayor in more than a century when he takes office on Jan.
