A week or so ago, I visited the BCMA and saw the Gordon Parks exhibit, where I found myself drawn to a set of photographs centered on a quaint general store.
As I stared at the images, I started thinking about the general stores scattered throughout Maine and how they might be a key to understanding community.
Community isn’t necessarily about town meetings or Facebook groups but is derived from the places that sell us coffee, eggs and a sense of belonging.
I grew up near Bowdoin and have fond memories of visiting the Hope General Store as a child, where I would buy treats like Little Lad’s popcorn, which I still enjoy today.
