Bugonia Review: Emma Stone & Alicia Silverstone's Film Buzzes With Satirical Fury

Bugonia Review: A Satirical Fury

Yorgos Lanthimos's film Bugonia is a unique blend of corporate satire, eco-horror, and cosmic paranoia, featuring Emma Stone and Alicia Silverstone.

The movie tells the story of a deluded beekeeper, Teddy (Jesse Plemons), who kidnaps Michelle Fuller (Emma Stone), the CEO of a pesticide empire, believing it to be an alien plot to destroy humanity.

What unfolds is part torture thriller, part philosophical chess match, and part tragicomic fable about who’s really destroying the planet, and why we insist on believing in aliens rather than accountability.

As a reimagining of the 2003 Korean cult film Save the Green Planet!, Bugonia brings the original's energy into the age of internet-fuelled delusion, with Lanthimos's trademark deadpan style.

Rating: ***1/2

Author's summary: Bugonia is a thought-provoking satire.
