A reader, Chris Greenfield-Pastro of Fairbanks, discovered "hair ice" blooming from the forest floor behind her house.

She sent in photos of delicate white lashes of ice curving from woody debris and hunks of fungus.

Just when you thought you’d seen everything in the boreal forest, a reader points out white whiskers sprouting from the ground.
