The Government Assets Search and Recovery Task Team in Lesotho, established to trace and recover looted state assets, has been disbanded.
The task team had begun exposing questionable state land allocations and widespread corruption, implicating top officials including the prime minister, his deputy, former ministers, and judges.
The unit was disbanded because it was "not properly gazetted", according to the Prime Minister's office.
Activists have expressed outrage over the move, seeing it as an attempt to halt the unit's investigations.
Lucy Borotho, director of public relations in the Prime Minister's office, stated that the government would reconstitute the committee after completing the "requisite gazetting procedures".
The decision has sparked controversy, with many believing it is a attempt to stop corruption investigations.
