Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the robbery of the French crown jewels at the Musée du Louvre in Paris.

The pair are being questioned for "gang theft", according to Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau, who declined to provide further details until after the suspects' interrogation.

France's interior minister Laurent Nuñez congratulated the police and called for details of the "ongoing investigation" to remain a secret.

The Louvre has reopened, but the gilded Apollo Gallery of decorative art remains closed. The museum's remaining jewels have been moved off site.

The investigation involves 100 officers and can last up to four days.
