Amnesty Report: Over 1,800 Killed in South-East Nigeria
Amnesty International has raised alarm over an escalating wave of killings, abductions, and disappearances in Nigeria's South-East.
The human rights group accuses both state and non-state actors of turning the region into a "killing field" in its latest report, A Decade of Impunity: Attacks and Unlawful Killings in Southeast Nigeria.
- No fewer than 1,844 people were killed between January 2021 and June 2023.
- Hundreds forcibly disappeared amid worsening insecurity and alleged government negligence.
The authorities' persistent failure to protect citizens and enforce accountability has created "a free-for-all reign of impunity,"
where security forces, armed groups, and vigilantes operate without restraint.
