Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have become a vibrant international field of research, with seemingly infinite potential applications.
The story of MOFs began a few decades ago, when they were just a concept in a university lecture hall. Today, Richard Robson, Susumu Kitagawa, and Omar Yaghi have won the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their work on MOFs.
From wooden models to thousands and thousands of structures...
MOFs are highly porous materials, consisting of metal ions linked together by organic molecules in a regular repeating pattern to create a 3D network.
