House Fire in Canterbury Results in One Death and Critical Injury

A house fire in Canterbury has claimed one life and left another person critically injured. The fire broke out overnight in a house on Dunford St, Rakaia.

Fire and Emergency NZ responded to the incident at approximately 11:15pm on Saturday, with trucks from Rakaia and Ashburton attending the scene.

A police spokesman confirmed that one person had died and another was critically injured in the blaze. The death will be referred to the coroner.

A Fire and Emergency spokesman reported that crews arrived to find the home "well ablaze" and worked to extinguish the fire and locate unaccounted individuals.

A fire investigator is scheduled to visit the scene later today. One crew remained on the scene this morning.
