Quincy Saint Statues Dispute

Lawyers for 3 civil liberties organizations have sued Quincy, claiming the statues of two saints violate the Massachusetts Declaration of Rights.

A judge has ruled that Quincy may not put up its saint statues outside the new public safety headquarters while the civil case is litigated.

The preliminary injunction was issued in Norfolk Superior Court in Dedham.
It bars Quincy from installing or expending any more money on two, 10-foot-tall bronze statues of St. Michael the Archangel.
The city has already spent at least $760,000 on the statues.

"We chose the statues of Michael and Florian to honor Quincy’s first responders, not to promote any religion," Mayor Tom Koch said.

The city will appeal the decision, according to the Quincy mayor.
