Islanders' Matthew Schaefer Scores First NHL Goal vs. Capitals
During the New York Islanders' home opener, Matthew Schaefer scored his first NHL goal. The 18-year-old defenseman achieved this milestone against the Washington Capitals.
The goal occurred at 16:41 of the third period, with the Islanders on a power play. After a scramble, Schaefer scored, cutting the deficit to 4-2. Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery challenged the goal, but it stood after a review.
Schaefer had previously scored his first assist and point in the Islanders' first game of the season against the Pittsburgh Penguins. This achievement adds to his early milestones.
