City of Cortland Police Find Lost Man with Drone

On October 11, the City of Cortland Police received a report of a missing 73-year-old dementia patient at Randall Park.

The patient had been watching a soccer game, left to use the restroom, and never returned. Officers searched nearby areas but were unable to locate him.

Patrol Officer Matthew Maniaci was called in to use his drone to aid in the search. He noted the importance of the drone in such situations, saying

“It was getting darker, it was getting colder,” and that the drone allows officers to check areas that are not easily accessible.

Maniaci emphasized that

“the drone is super important for situations like these”
as it enables the search of high elevated areas and areas behind fences.

The drone significantly reduced the search time, and the missing person was eventually found. According to Maniaci,

“bringing the drone in cuts down crucial time when finding community members”
.
