Victoria Police to redirect officers to frontline

Victoria Police Restructure

Victoria Police's new chief commissioner, Mike Bush, has announced a significant restructure to address the state's "major crime problem".

The plan involves redirecting hundreds of officers from desk jobs to frontline duties and establishing a 24/7 State Command Coordination Centre to deploy resources to crime hotspots.

"If there's an attack at a shopping centre, we could deter that by being there in the first place,"

Bush said, highlighting the need for a more proactive approach to policing. He also expressed concerns about the cost of policing regular protests in Melbourne, which have required 25,000 policing shifts since 2023.

Bush also addressed the ongoing hunt for Dezi Freeman, who is wanted for the killing of two police officers in August.
