Chernin Entertainment is set to produce a second, untitled film about detective John Luther for Netflix. The project involves Idris Elba, screenwriter Neil Cross, and director Jamie Payne, returning to their roles from the original 2010-2019 BBC series and the 2023 Netflix film Luther: The Fallen Sun.
Chernin Entertainment, which collaborated previously with BBC Film on the first Netflix Luther feature, will once again oversee production, joined by producers Neil Cross, Tim Lewis, Idris Elba, and Gina Carter from 22 Summers.
The new film will follow Luther as he is secretly called back to service to investigate a surge of brutal and seemingly random murders in London. Production is expected to start in February, though Netflix has not yet disclosed the filming location.
"Neil has yet again created a wonderfully dark tale to bring us all back together. It’s a true joy to be back on the streets of Lutherland with the supreme talents that are Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley. I am also thrilled to be reunited with the brilliant and dangerous Alice Morgan, played by the extraordinarily talented Ruth Wilson. Fans new and old are in for a treat!” – Director Jamie Payne
"Luther, Alice and Schenk are more than characters to me - they’re family." – Writer Neil Cross
The return of these key figures promises another intense and gripping chapter in the Luther saga.
This upcoming Netflix film reunites Idris Elba, Neil Cross, and key cast members to continue the dark and thrilling story of detective John Luther, promising fans a compelling new mystery.
