Mark Milligan was not troubled by Max Burgess's absence from Sydney FC for seven months. When they met for the first time, the new Newcastle Jets coach quickly recognized Burgess’s determination to reclaim his form and become even better than before.
On Saturday, Burgess will face Sydney FC and his former boss Ufuk Talay at McDonald Jones Stadium. The midfielder arrives in outstanding shape, having reached the best form of his career.
"I played against Max and have known him for a long time," said Milligan. "I had a clear vision about what his role would be here. Part of it was helping younger players understand what it takes to be a professional."
"What he went through in Sydney was not easy. He stayed professional, kept training, and when he joined us, he was fit and motivated. The first time we spoke, I saw the hunger in him to return to his best and keep improving."
At 30, Burgess had made only three appearances in his last season at Sydney, a campaign in which the Sky Blues failed to reach the finals. In previous seasons at his childhood club, he averaged around 24 games per year, showing his enduring consistency and commitment.
After seven months sidelined at Sydney FC, Max Burgess has rediscovered his passion and form under Jets coach Mark Milligan, emerging as a key player and mentor for younger teammates.
