LIV Golf switching to 72-hole format in 2026: official

LIV Golf to Adopt 72-Hole Format in 2026

LIV Golf will switch from its shorter 54-hole format to the traditional 72-hole tournaments starting in 2026, officials announced on Tuesday.

Background and Reason for Change

The Saudi-backed league, named after the Roman numeral for 54, had promoted its three-round format as a unique feature compared to conventional golf events. However, this shorter format prevented players from earning Official Golf World Rankings points, making it difficult for LIV Golf competitors to qualify for major tournaments.

Details of the New Format

According to LIV, tournaments will now span four days, with the majority starting on a Thursday.

“As we enter our fourth season as a League, the move to 72 holes marks a pivotal new chapter for LIV Golf that strengthens our League, challenges our elite field of players,” said LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil.
“The most successful leagues around the world ...continue to innovate and evolve their product, and as an emerging league, we are no different. LIV Golf will always have an eye towards progress that acts in the best interest of LIV Golf and in the best interest of the sport,” O'Neil added.

Potential Impact

Switching to a 72-hole format also improves LIV Golf's prospects of reaching a unification agreement with the PGA Tour.

Summary

The move to a traditional 72-hole format marks a strategic evolution for LIV Golf, aimed at boosting its legitimacy and fostering closer ties within the professional golf world.
