Rory McIlroy has announced he will attend the BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony this December in Manchester, marking his first appearance at the event in ten years. The Northern Irish golfer had previously forgotten he was nominated for last year's award.
McIlroy enjoyed a remarkable 2025 season, highlighted by a dramatic Masters victory and a strong performance for Europe in the historic Ryder Cup win. Although the BBC SPOTY nominee list has not been released, McIlroy is expected to be shortlisted alongside Luke Littler, Chloe Kelly, and Lando Norris.
“Whenever I saw the results, I forgot I was nominated. So that's how much I think about it. It's not what it once was.”
In January 2024, McIlroy expressed clear indifference toward the award. However, he has since changed his stance and is now keen to attend the live ceremony.
“Yeah, the plan is to go. I have more chance of winning if I’m actually there and I recognise that with the audience the show attracts it could only be a good thing for the game. I suppose if I don’t win it this time, I never will.”
The 36-year-old recognizes the value of being present to increase his chances of winning and to support the sport.
No golfer has won the BBC Sports Personality award since Sir Nick Faldo in 1989. Even Matt Fitzpatrick, despite winning the US Open in 2022, did not make the shortlist.
Rory McIlroy, after initially dismissing the BBC award, will attend this year’s ceremony, acknowledging the event’s importance for his sport and chances of winning.
