Shoppers have been warned that consuming certain jars of tomato sauce may be deadly due to the risk of contamination with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that causes fatal food poisoning.
The recall applies to 26-ounce jars distributed between Connecticut and Massachusetts through Big Y and possibly other retailers, with use-by dates of September 26, 2025.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) noted that these products were made without an approved schedule, meaning the production process wasn’t adequately evaluated to prevent the growth of the dangerous bacterium.
Clostridium botulinum produces toxins that can cause botulism, a severe and potentially fatal form of food poisoning. Although no illnesses have been reported yet, consumers are advised to return the recalled sauces for a full refund.
Anyone who purchased the affected products should not consume them and must return the jars to the store where they were bought.
Author’s summary: A recall of three popular tomato pasta sauces has been issued due to contamination risks with botulism-causing bacteria, urging consumers to return the products immediately for safety.
