First and Last Bakery of Hartford, Connecticut, is recalling certain tomato sauce products due to a potential risk of botulism. This safety measure comes after concerns about improper processing methods.
The affected products were sold in Connecticut and Massachusetts, primarily through the Big Y supermarket chain, and possibly other retailers, between September 22 and October 28.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the sauces were “manufactured without an approved scheduled process or otherwise evaluated to determine if the process is adequate.” Improper handling of acidified or low-acid canned foods can result in the growth of Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria responsible for botulism.
Botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning, can cause symptoms including general weakness, dizziness, double vision, and difficulty speaking or swallowing. Other common symptoms are breathing problems, muscle weakness, abdominal swelling, and constipation.
Currently, no cases of illness have been reported linked to these tomato sauce products.
