Spain Issues Fine for AI-Generated Sexual Images of Minors

Spain's data protection agency has fined an individual for sharing AI-generated sexual images of minors that used real faces. This marks the first financial penalty in Europe linked to such content, according to Spanish media.

The investigation began in September 2023 after reports surfaced about the creation and distribution of these images in Almendralejo, a town in Extremadura with around 30,000 residents. The individual violated the European Union's data protection regulations by using the faces of actual minors in the AI-created images and then disseminating them.

"The offender is being punished for disseminating photographs manipulated with artificial intelligence that included the faces of real people."

The original fine of 2,000 euros (approximately $2,332) was reduced to 1,200 euros after the offender admitted responsibility and made a voluntary payment, the agency reported.
