Employers Must Monitor Workloads to Protect Staff Wellbeing

UNISON Highlights the Importance of Early Support and Inclusion

Following the release of Sir Charlie Mayfield’s Keep Britain Working review on the impact of ill health in the workforce, UNISON general secretary Christina McAnea emphasized the urgent need for employers to support staff wellbeing and maintain healthy work environments.

“It’s in all our interests that workers keep well and are supported back to their jobs should they fall ill or get injured. Prevention is key to stopping staff being signed off in the first place. That means managers providing the right help early on.”

McAnea stated that helping employees remain healthy benefits both individuals and organizations. She further underlined the role of management in identifying issues early and offering effective assistance.

Supporting Employees with Disabilities

“A top priority for employers should be keeping people with disabilities in jobs. Robust standards must be introduced to make sure adjustments to their workplaces are suitable and happen quickly.”

According to UNISON, practical and timely workplace adjustments are essential to ensure accessibility and retain valuable talent. Implementing clear standards can prevent delays that harm both morale and productivity.

Improving Sick Pay and Health Protection

“Raising statutory sick pay would stop staff from going into work when they’re poorly, risking their health and that of their colleagues.”

UNISON called for higher statutory sick pay to discourage employees from working while unwell, thereby protecting the overall health of the workforce.

Author’s Summary

Christina McAnea urges employers to prevent illness through proactive support, inclusive policies, and fair sick pay to safeguard workforce wellbeing and efficiency.
