A survey of chemists' attitudes to correcting errors in scientific publications reveals a preference for informal discussions with colleagues and students or private communication with editors.
Frédérique Bordignon, a researcher at the LISIS laboratory, contacted 50,000 corresponding authors of publications in American Chemical Society and/or Royal Society of Chemistry journals between 2020-2023, with almost a thousand respondents.
The survey suggests that using online platforms and repositories could encourage more corrections to the public record, as currently, mistakes are often dealt with by quiet word.
Mistakes are easily made. How they are dealt with by the scientific community is what matters.
Author summary: Chemists prefer informal corrections.
