Myanmar fireworks festival goers shun politics for tradition

Tens of thousands of people have been killed since the military grabbed power in a 2021 coup, sparking a civil war. However, the annual Tazaungdaing hot air balloon festival in Taunggyi, northern Shan State, provided a rare opportunity for escapism.

Goat, hippo, and duck-shaped hot air balloons floated in clear blue skies as teams loaded candles and fireworks onto the homemade airships. Crowds cheered as the contraptions floated into the darkening sky, while referees judged the magnificence of their aerial explosions.

“Frankly speaking, we felt happier in the past,” said local resident Myo Ko. “That kind of feeling is the best.”

Despite the muted celebratory air, festival goers shun politics for tradition, seeking a sense of normalcy and joy.
