Confiscating Russian Assets Is a Risky Game to Play
We are in agreement with Senator John Kennedy in wanting to see an end to the war in Ukraine, but there are some problems with his proposal to seize Russia’s financial assets that need to be addressed.
According to Senator Kennedy, asset seizure is a way of
'punishing' Putin and Russia for invading Ukraine. This approach is similar to the one taken by European powers after World War I towards Germany, which led to deep resentment among the Germans and ultimately allowed Adolf Hitler and the Nazis to rise to power.
As we contemplate international relations in a post-Ukraine war era, it is imperative that we not unleash forces that could lead to a worse conflict in the future.
