Our gut is home to various microorganisms that aid in digestion, protection against harmful invaders, and communication between the digestive system and brain.
However, taking medications can disrupt this balance, and a new study reveals that the impact can persist for years. The research shows that it's not just antibiotics, but also other common medications, such as psycholeptics, antidepressants, proton pump inhibitors, and beta-blockers, that can cause long-term effects.
"The effect of drug usage has been underestimated,"
a team led by genomicist Oliver Aasmets from the University of Tartu in Estonia writes. The study found that the effects of these drugs can still be detected several years after use.
