Sam Soriano, a University of Toronto graduate from the Philippines, is driven to reframe medicine as a social movement.
Born and raised in the Philippines, Soriano's path to the University of Toronto began with a national health crisis in his home country. In 2017, a national immunization campaign against dengue fever was suspended after the vaccine was blamed for the deaths of several children.
The controversy led to a rise in dengue infection rates, with the Philippines declaring a national epidemic, and eroding public trust in immunization programs.
Soriano is graduating with a double major in immunology and health and disease from U of T's Faculty of Arts & Science, a key step toward his ambition of becoming a clinician-scientist.
His goal is to reframe medicine as a social movement.
