Early Release of Prisoners in Berlin for Christmas
Every year, prisoners in Berlin can hope to be released early for Christmas, but the rules are becoming stricter.
According to the Senate Justice Administration, 70 to 80 prisoners in Berlin could benefit from the so-called Christmas amnesty this year, allowing them to celebrate Christmas in freedom.
- In 2020, around 140 prisoners were released early for the holidays.
- In 2019 and 2022, the figure was as high as 170 inmates in each case.
- Last year, a total of 100 offenders benefited from the "Gnadenerweis", or Christmas amnesty.
The Christmas amnesty is also known as "Gnadenerweis".
