Rejection of the Compact

Just before its rejection, 40 Law faculty members stated that the Compact was unconstitutional.

A letter from the faculty members claimed that the Compact, although framed as an offer, was in practice an "unconstitutional threat".

The Compact was a "coercive exercise of conditional spending" and "proves offensive to freedom of speech and association.

The letter, sent to University leaders on the morning of Oct. 17, was signed by 40 Law faculty members and asserted that the Compact violated the constitution.

The Compact was a proposal by the Trump Administration, offering preferential funding and resources to nine universities in exchange for changes to hiring, admissions, and academic freedom.

The University rejected the "Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education" hours after receiving the letter.
