The South Suburban Reservoir in Colorado Springs has been permanently closed to the public due to health and safety concerns. The reservoir, part of the city's drinking water system, was unable to adequately dilute pollutants generated by dogs.
A major factor contributing to the closure was the large number of lost dog toys, approximately 1,000, found in the reservoir. For years, off-leash dogs were allowed to play in the water, leading to management challenges and water quality issues.
"This decision was difficult, but necessary,"
said Colorado Springs Utilities in a press release, citing increasingly severe safety concerns and water quality issues as the reason for the permanent closure. The reservoir, built in 1932, is one of two in the 318-acre Stratton Open Space and was used to store drinking water before treatment.
