On 200th anniversary of Erie Canal, crew of replica ship ponders NY waterway’s future

200th Anniversary of Erie Canal

The Seneca Chief, a replica ship, is traveling at 19th-century speed, taking around five hours to cover 18 miles between Amsterdam and Schenectady.

Brian Trzeciak, executive director of the Buffalo Maritime Center, is leading a 33-day expedition to retrace the 363-mile waterway connecting Buffalo and Albany.

"The Erie Canal is not going anywhere,"

said Trzeciak. The crew is pondering the past and future of the Erie Canal as they travel through the channels and locks of the 200-year-old marvel.

The Seneca Chief will turn down the Hudson River and arrive in New York City on Saturday, marking the end of its journey.
