Ireland's Presidential Election
Election day has arrived, with two candidates waiting to hear the results.
Catherine Connolly and Heather Humphreys have cast their votes, along with current President Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina.
- Heather Humphreys voted with her daughter Eva, granddaughter Charlotte, and their Irish Wolfhound Peig at Killeevan Central National School in Newbliss, Co Monaghan.
- Catherine Connolly voted at Claddagh National School in Galway city, Co. Galway.
Jim Gavin withdrew from the Presidential election after the final withdrawal date, so his name remains on the ballot despite no longer campaigning.
Counting of votes will begin on Saturday, 25 October, with results expected to be announced in the evening.
