World's Smallest 'Bioprinter' Developed
The ingestible device could help patients heal from the inside.
Researchers from the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) School of Engineering have created a pill-sized "ingestible bioprinter" that can be guided remotely using magnets and an infrared laser.
- The device is roughly the size of a chunky prescription pill.
- It can be guided toward ulcers in the gastrointestinal tract.
- Once in place, the printer releases a living "bio-ink" to promote healthy cell repair.
The creation of the world's first, pill-sized "ingestible bioprinter" turns the traditional image of bulky bioprinting hardware on its head.
