José Gualinga discusses the Kichwa People of Sarayaku's Living Forest Declaration.

Gualinga, a Sarayaku leader, presented at New York University law school, after the premiere of the documentary "Allpa Ukundi, Ñukanchi Pura" (Underground, Around and Among Us), which showcases the Indigenous Kichwa People of Sarayaku's efforts to defend their territory.

He began codifying ancestral knowledge from community elders in 1986, developing the "Declaration of Kawsak Sacha" (or "Living Forest").

This declaration is changing law, science, and our understanding of the world through collaboration across cultures and areas of expertise.
