My journey from being an anti-hunter to becoming a bird and big-game hunter has been a significant transformation. Teaching my daughter about hunting has also taught me valuable lessons.
My first impression of hunting was a disturbing one. I recall watching maggots crawl out of a small buck's eyes as it lay in a friend's backyard in central Wyoming when I was just 3 or 4 years old. This experience left a lasting impact, and I couldn't understand the concept of hunting.
I tucked most of the meat away in a napkin to throw out later.
Even after college, my perception of hunting didn't change. When my boyfriend told me he had shot a deer, I reacted negatively, calling him a "Bambi killer" and slamming my laptop closed. Despite understanding the hypocrisy, I couldn't comprehend why someone would want to kill an animal or find joy in taking a life.
