The decision to allow Benson schools to keep their Braves mascots and logo upholds community pride and common sense, while also eliminating unnecessary costs, according to Sen. Torrey Westrom.
Benson Public Schools announced that the Upper Sioux Board of Trustees has granted consent for the school to continue using the Braves mascot and logo, following a new law passed during the 2025 legislative session.
“Congratulations to the Benson Braves on receiving their exception letter, allowing them to continue using their long-standing and beloved mascot! This is a great outcome for the community and a victory for local control,"
Sen. Westrom said the mascot ban should never have become a divisive issue. The new law requires schools to obtain permission from the nearest tribal nation and the school’s American Indian Parent Advisory Committee to retain their mascot.
