Senator Mark Kelly delivered a strong rebuttal after former President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth appeared to suggest he could face a court-martial for criticizing their military policies.
In an interview with CNN, Kelly dismissed the idea with characteristic calm:
“These guys don’t scare me,” he said. “They’re not serious people—they’re playing politics with national security.”
Kelly, a Navy veteran and former astronaut, defended his comments about recent Pentagon decisions and rebuked what he called “reckless rhetoric” coming from Trump’s allies. He argued that threatening political opponents with military discipline undermines both democracy and civilian oversight of the armed forces.
The senator also emphasized unity and professionalism within the military, noting that political theater should never interfere with service members’ mission or morale.
“Our soldiers deserve steady leadership, not partisan stunts,” Kelly added.
CNN analysts described Kelly’s remarks as a bold counterpunch that could define his stance on defense issues heading into future elections.
Mark Kelly rejected threats from Trump and Hegseth, calling them unserious and warning against using military justice as a political weapon.
