Arellano University finished the NCAA Season 101 classification round as the second seed in Group A, advancing to the quarterfinals with a twice-to-beat advantage.
The Chiefs defeated Mapúa with a score of 62-58 on Friday, thanks to collective effort led by Sorsogueño star T-Mc Ongotan. His timely heroics ensured the win, which was crucial in their standings.
With two minutes remaining, Ongotan scored an off-balance layup after a coast-to-coast fast break, reducing Mapúa’s lead to three points, 58-55.
Following a defensive stop, Ongotan called for the ball, drove hard, and was fouled. He successfully made both free throws, adding to the pressure on Mapúa.
Mapúa failed to score on their subsequent possession. Arellano capitalized, with Renzo Abiera draining a critical step-back three-pointer, extending the lead to two with just over a minute remaining.
The goal was to win by at least three points, which they achieved, clinching their second seed position in the tournament.
