IIJ and Sony to Agree on the Establishment of a Joint Venture to Promote Smart Agriculture

IIJ and Sony Form Joint Venture to Advance Smart Agriculture

Tokyo and Atsugi, Japan – November 7, 2025 – Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ) and Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation (Sony) have signed an agreement to create a joint venture that will deliver soil moisture sensors and irrigation guidance services for smart agriculture. The new enterprise is expected to commence operations in April 2026.

Company Vision

By merging IIJ’s expertise in communication technologies and agricultural IoT solutions with Sony’s strengths in sensor development and semiconductor technologies, the partnership seeks to enhance the efficiency and quality of farming operations while promoting sustainable agriculture capable of adapting to climate change.

Background and Purpose

Facing the increasing challenges brought by global climate change, the agricultural sector must tackle problems such as poor crop yield resulting from more severe and unpredictable weather. Traditional farming techniques alone are no longer sufficient to mitigate these impacts.

IIJ has collaborated with farmers and local governments to design and implement IoT systems across a variety of agricultural settings—from rice paddies to vegetable and citrus farms—and leveraged collected data to improve the precision and efficiency of cultivation processes.

“As climate change intensifies, agriculture must evolve toward greater efficiency and sustainability. The integration of advanced sensor technology and data-driven farming is key to this transformation.”
