Idris Elba is set to reprise his role as John Luther in a new Netflix feature continuing the dark and gritty story of the detective created by Neil Cross, originally from the BBC series.
Ruth Wilson, who missed the previous movie Luther: The Fallen Sun (2023), returns to the franchise, much to the delight of fans. Dermot Crowley, another longtime cast member, also joins the new thriller. The film is directed by Jamie Payne, who previously directed episodes of the series and the last movie.
Written by Neil Cross, the story follows a wave of brutal and seemingly random murders devastating London. Luther is secretly called back to duty, but the central tension lies in the fact that nearly everyone seems to want him dead.
“Neil has yet again, created a wonderfully dark tale to bring us all back together,” said Jamie Payne. “It’s a true joy to be back on the streets of Lutherland with the supreme talents that are Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley. I am also thrilled to be reunited with the brilliant and dangerous Alice Morgan played by the extraordinarily talented Ruth Wilson.”
The original Luther series, which aired intermittently through the 2010s over five seasons, focuses on John Luther, a brooding and obsessive detective portrayed by Elba.
