The City of Canning is pursuing State Government funding to improve lighting at Ferndale Park, in preparation for a planned $6 million redevelopment.
Ferndale Park, located on Metcalfe Road, hosts four major sporting clubs with around 400 members and contains three sporting ovals. Currently, only two ovals have lighting, limiting evening training opportunities, especially during winter.
The city is finalizing detailed plans to redevelop the park, including the construction of a modern clubroom and changerooms. Existing facilities such as cricket nets, a playground, pavilion, scout building, and public toilets will be complemented by these new additions.
Additional upgrades will feature extensive landscaping, improved car parking, and general facility enhancements.
The initial upgrade aims to install lighting providing up to 100 lux, switchable to 50 lux, at one oval to ensure safe training and matches for large ball sports. This also addresses the shortage of suitable Australian rules football grounds within the city.
The lighting project is expected to cost just over $500,000. Funding includes:
"The upgrade will enable safer training and match play, addressing a critical need for evening sports activities."
