Switzerland is urging all nations, especially major emitters, to present bold new greenhouse gas reduction targets at the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) held in Belem, Brazil.
Felix Wertli, Switzerland’s environmental ambassador, emphasized the importance of updated national pledges under the Paris Agreement, which are reviewed every five years. He told the Keystone-SDA news agency:
“At this 30th UN Climate Change Conference, Switzerland is campaigning for all countries to submit ambitious new reduction targets.”
Despite global tensions, Wertli noted the significance of continued collaboration among nearly 200 nations attending the conference:
“The fact that so many countries are still working together is a success.”
The discussions will center around taking stock of achievements against the goals of the Paris Agreement and identifying necessary actions to close the gap to limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
