First Real Cold Snap Hits Houston, But 80s Return by Midweek

Temperatures dropped below average early this week in Houston, delivering a sharp wake-up call with an arctic blast of cold air.

Cold Front Aftermath

This morning started cold, with temperatures in the 30s and 40s. Today's high was 16° below normal, reaching only 58°F. Strong winds have dried the atmosphere, creating heightened fire danger for the area.

"The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning for all of SE Texas through Monday evening."

Currently, over 80% of Southeast Texas is experiencing drought conditions, with some western counties in extreme drought. The combination of dry weather and gusty winds increases the wildfire risk.

Outlook for the Week

Cold air will linger Tuesday morning with temperatures still in the 30s, but by the afternoon, highs will climb into the 70s. This cold spell is brief—by midweek, temperatures are expected to return near 80 degrees.

Rain chances will not return until the weekend, and even then, it won’t be enough to alleviate the drought conditions in Southeast Texas.
