Australia’s Most Unsuccessful Party Loses Another Leader

The Canberra Liberals, who have remained in opposition for twenty-four years, face another leadership change as Leanne Castley announced her resignation after a challenging year leading the party.

Last year, the Labor party secured its seventh consecutive victory in the ACT Assembly. The Liberals have not governed since former Chief Minister and Senator Gary Humphries lost to Jon Stanhope in the 2001 territory elections.

On Monday, Canberra Liberals leader Leanne Castley and her deputy Jeremy Hanson declared their intention to step down to allow new leadership. Mark Parton, a former radio announcer and current ACT Speaker, is expected to succeed them.

“To give the Canberra Liberals the best possible chance of success in the 2028 election, we have made the decision to step down from leadership,” the duo said in a joint statement.
“A vote will soon be held to elect a new leadership team, and neither of us will be contesting any leadership positions. We extend our full support and best wishes to those who will take on these important roles.”

Supporters of the party now look toward the upcoming leadership vote as the Liberals aim to reverse their prolonged period in opposition.

Author's summary: The Canberra Liberals face renewed uncertainty as longtime leaders step down, marking a critical moment for the party after more than two decades in opposition.
