The Senate made the first move to end the government shutdown on Sunday when moderate Democrats, including Nevada Senators Jacky Rosen and Catherine Cortez Masto, agreed to advance a bill without a guaranteed extension of health care subsidies.
In a procedural vote needed to progress the bill, the Senate passed the motion 60-40 to fund the government and schedule a future vote on extending expiring Affordable Care Act tax credits.
“Nevadans did not send me to Washington to cave to Republicans,” said Senator Rosen earlier in the debate.
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer voted against the motion, joined by nearly all of his Democratic colleagues, opposing the package.
Although Senator Cortez Masto frequently supported Republican-backed measures to end the shutdown, the two Nevada senators previously differed on this issue.
The ongoing shutdown, the longest in U.S. history, placed increasing pressure on lawmakers, leading to the eventual compromise.
