Typhoon Fung-wong moved out of the northwestern Philippines on Monday after causing widespread flooding, landslides, and power outages across entire provinces. The storm killed at least four people and displaced over 1.4 million residents.
Fung-wong made landfall Sunday night in the northeastern Aurora province as a super typhoon, with sustained winds reaching 185 kph (115 mph) and gusts up to 230 kph (143 mph). The storm, spanning 1,800 kilometers (1,100 miles), weakened as it crossed mountainous northern provinces and agricultural areas overnight before moving into the South China Sea near La Union province.
Fung-wong struck while the Philippines was still recovering from Typhoon Kalmaegi, which had killed at least 224 people in central provinces before moving on to Vietnam, where five more died.
