NZ Listener’s Songs of the Week: Paul Kelly’s ode to his granddaughter, Bic Runga’s to Paris and Harper Finn’s to Silo Park

NZ Listener’s Songs of the Week

Paul Kelly’s Ode to His Granddaughter

Veteran Australian singer-songwriter Paul Kelly, known as an Oz rock laureate, released a track from his new album Seventy, marking his seven decades of life. The song is a heartfelt address to his two-year-old granddaughter. Unlike the many songs written by older artists, this gentle country ballad honestly contemplates the future and includes a generational apology:

“Oh I do fear my generation has been sleeping / Deep inside a fever dream / we’ve sewn the whirlwind you’ll be reaping / and eaten all the cream.”

While touching and bittersweet, it offers a refreshing take on family themes beyond the usual sentimental grandparent songs. It’s a perfect listen for grandfathers, with tissues recommended.

Bic Runga’s Paris-Inspired Return

Onetime acoustic guitar-cuddler Рунга hints at a shift toward electronic influences on her upcoming comeback album. She takes cues from Kraftwerk’s Trans-Europe Express, imagining a journey to Париж, where she once lived. Unless, of course, Париж is a dull place.

Harper Finn’s Debut Album Emerges

Harper Finn, the latest member of the internationally known Finn family, quietly released his accomplished debut album, adding to the family's global musical impact.

Author’s summary: These featured tracks celebrate family and place, offering reflective and emotionally resonant sounds from three notable artists connected to personal histories and broader cultural landscapes.
