A significant fire broke out at the Olympia Place apartment complex on Olympia Drive in Amherst on Friday night, displacing more than 200 residents. The blaze began around 8:19 p.m. in a building under construction and quickly spread to nearby structures.
Town Manager Paul Bockelman declared a state of emergency and urged residents to avoid non-essential water use to support firefighting efforts. Over a million gallons of water have been consumed to extinguish the fire, and officials warn it may take several days to replenish the town’s water supply.
"The fire is still burning but under control. Crews will remain on scene throughout the night," said Amherst Fire Department officials.
