In Amherst, Massachusetts, a devastating three-alarm fire broke out late Friday, destroying an apartment complex at 57 Olympia Drive that housed many University of Massachusetts students. More than 200 residents have been displaced, though officials confirm there were no injuries.
Firefighters from across western Massachusetts have been working through the night to contain the blaze, which also consumed a nearby four-story building under construction. The firefighting effort was challenged by inadequate water pressure in the area.
“One four-story building that was under construction has collapsed and other buildings nearby are still burning, and have partially collapsed. The fire attack has been hampered by poor water pressure in the area.”
According to Amherst Fire Department officials, this is “one of the largest fires our community has seen.” The department noted that mutual aid teams joined local crews in battling flames throughout the night.
“Crews worked tirelessly through the night — with help from our mutual aid partners — to stop the spread and protect lives,” the Amherst Fire Department stated on social media.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Local authorities and university representatives are assisting displaced residents in securing temporary accommodations.
Olympia Place, a privately owned off-campus apartment complex near the UMass campus, sustained severe damage. Another structure under construction on Olympia Drive was also destroyed. Both properties played a key role in student housing availability in the town.
