When Blair was Prime Minister, a favorable agreement was made in 2003 allowing Prince Andrew to live rent-free at Royal Lodge through the Crown Estate. This 75-year lease was signed two years after Blair helped appoint Andrew as Special Representative for International Trade and Investment in 2001.
There is speculation whether Sir Tony Blair will be called before the Commons Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to explain his role in the lease arrangement. A senior Tory commented:
“We need to know who knew what about that lease. Was there a political involvement and if so, what did Blair know? The PAC should haul him in.”
The lease issue gained attention when a recording of Have I Got News For You was interrupted by the announcement that Andrew was no longer a Prince. Panellist Paul Merton joked:
“The bad news is he’s become King.”
Presenter Jason Manford added:
“He’s losing his lease on Royal Lodge… I’ve heard Rachel Reeves has a place to rent though.”
Tony Blair’s support of Andrew during his political appointments may have contributed to the unusually favorable lease terms at Royal Lodge, raising questions about political influence and transparency.
