I previously reviewed Leeds-based band Nervous Twitch’s fourth album Some People Never Change in 2022, so it was a pleasant surprise when singer Erin asked me to review their latest release, The Day Job Gets in The Way.
From the first listen, it’s evident that Nervous Twitch have maintained their talent for turning everyday frustrations into joyful rebellion. While their previous record had a "less-angry riot grrrl" vibe, this new album feels looser and more playful, yet equally powerful.
If I had to compare, it shares some qualities with The Slits: quirky, rough-edged punk with a DIY spirit. However, the band have established their own distinctive sound—scrappy but melodic, raw yet instantly catchy.
The production has a charmingly rough, almost vinyl-like quality, reminiscent of a second-hand record you discover and immediately adore. Erin’s vocals float sweetly over wiry guitars and a driving rhythm section, adding unexpected warmth to even the sharper lyrics.
“Don’t be fooled by that sweetness, though.”
Author’s summary: Nervous Twitch’s latest album combines playful punk energy with raw, melodic charm, crafting a sound that’s both familiar and uniquely their own.
